GPON Network Planning & Optimization Using GIS

GIS-driven planning and optimization for a province-wide Gigabit Passive Optical Network rollout, migrating thousands of households from legacy broadband to fiber.

01 Overview

Rolling out fiber infrastructure across a province isn't just a network engineering problem - it's fundamentally a spatial one: where the existing infrastructure sits, where households are concentrated, and how to route new fiber runs efficiently against real terrain and existing right-of-way. We used GIS tools to lead planning and optimization for a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) rollout across Balochistan.

The work involved mapping existing legacy broadband coverage against household density and demand data, identifying priority zones for fiber buildout, and optimizing route planning to minimize redundant infrastructure while maximizing coverage. Every planning decision - where to place distribution points, which legacy customers to prioritize for migration - was grounded in the actual spatial layout of the network area, not generalized assumptions.

The result of the planning phase fed directly into execution: a phased migration that moved thousands of households from legacy broadband onto GPON infrastructure, with measurably better coverage and service quality than the infrastructure it replaced.

02 The Challenge

Legacy broadband infrastructure across the region had inconsistent coverage and quality, and planning a province-wide fiber rollout without a spatial view of existing infrastructure, household density, and terrain risked inefficient routing and wasted buildout costs.

03 Our Solution

We used GIS tools to map existing infrastructure against household density and demand data, identify priority buildout zones, and optimize fiber route planning - grounding every infrastructure decision in the actual spatial layout of the network area rather than general assumptions.

04 Results & Impact

3,000+ households were migrated from legacy broadband services to GPON infrastructure, with improved network coverage and service quality across the rollout area.
